Top 10 National Resources for Child Abuse Prevention

Preventing child abuse and neglect requires education, strong families, supportive communities, informed professionals, and accessible resources that help adults recognize risks and take action early. Fortunately, families, educators, caregivers, and community organizations have access to national organizations that provide everything from crisis support and prevention education to evidence-based strategies and child-safety tools. Here are 10 leading national resources to know about.

  1. Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline (24/7 at 1-800-4-A-CHILD): Confidential support and information for concerns about a child or guidance about a situation involving abuse or neglect.
  2. Prevent Child Abuse America: Focuses on preventing child abuse and neglect before they happen by strengthening families and communities, supported by Healthy Families America.
  3. Child Welfare Information Gateway: Operated by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is a valuable source of research, publications, statistics, and practical information related to child welfare.
  4. National Children’s Alliance: Supports the network of Children’s Advocacy Centers (CACs) across the U.S. and brings together professionals from multiple disciplines to coordinate responses to allegations of child abuse.
  5. CDC Child Maltreatment Prevention: Provides extensive research and prevention resources focused on child abuse and neglect. Its prevention resources are used to reduce child maltreatment.
  6. Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN): Provides resources related to sexual violence, including support for survivors and information about prevention. RAINN operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline at 800-656-HOPE (4673) and provides information and resources for people affected by sexual violence.
  7. Stop It Now!: Focuses specifically on preventing child sexual abuse and exploitation. Rather than responding after abuse occurs, the organization provides resources designed to help adults recognize concerning behaviors, understand risk, and take steps to prevent abuse.
  8. National Center for Missing & Exploited Children: Provides resources addressing missing children, child sexual exploitation, and online safety. Its NetSmartz program offers age-appropriate educational materials designed to help children and adults understand online risks.
  9. Enough Abuse Campaign: Focuses on preventing child sexual abuse through community education and practical prevention strategies. Schools, organizations, communities, and other adults have a role and can contribute to child safety, in addition to parents and caregivers.
  10. Committee for Children: Develops social-emotional learning and child protection resources for schools and educators. Its Second Step program provides social-emotional learning curricula.

Protecting children isn’t only about recognizing warning signs or knowing what to do after abuse has occurred, prevention also means creating environments where children are supported, adults have the knowledge and resources they need, and families can access help before problems become crises. Knowing where to turn is part of that process.
