The holiday season is often painted as a time of joy, love and togetherness. But behind the twinkling lights and family gatherings lies a truth that rarely makes the headlines: many children are at their most vulnerable during this time of year. Child abuse reports drop dramatically in December. The reason is not because abuse stops, but because children are out of school and away from the teachers, counselors, bus drivers, coaches, and other mandated reporters who serve as their lifelines.1
Abuse doesn’t stop during the holidays… it simply goes unnoticed. What many don’t realize is that the danger often comes from within a child’s inner circle and more than half of all reported cases involve child-on-child harm. This means the traditional “stranger danger” message misses the real threat. Abuse happens in familiar places, by people who seem safe – relatives, family friends, siblings or peers. And during the holidays, when kids are surrounded by extended family or spending time with other children, the risks quietly increase. The season designed to bring joy can also create conditions where abuse is more likely:1
- Heightened stress from financial strain, family conflict and busier schedules.
- Increased alcohol use during gatherings, escalating tension and clouding judgment.
- Reduced oversight due to school closures and reliance on relatives, babysitters, or older children for supervision.
- Unsupervised play behind closed doors, sleepovers, or chaotic family events where adults are distracted.
Protecting children doesn’t require special training – it requires awareness, presence, and a willingness to act.1
- Empower Kids to Say No
- Check In Often
- Supervise Closely
- Recognize the Subtle Signs
- Be Present and Proactive
- Stay Alert to Digital Risks
- Act on Suspicions Immediately
This holiday season, let’s refuse to let abuse hide in the shadows of celebration. People who harm children often blend seamlessly into holiday gatherings – they are loved ones, trusted friends, and sometimes other children. Be the trusted adult who steps in. The greatest gift we can give children is the one they deserve most: safety, support, and hope.
