Summer break gives kids a chance to relax, explore and enjoy time with family and friends. It’s also a great opportunity to keep their minds active before heading back to school. Learning during the summer doesn’t have to feel like homework. The key is to make learning enjoyable. When kids are engaged, curious and having fun, they continue building knowledge without even realizing it.1
Everyday activities can help children strengthen important skills like reading, math, creativity and critical thinking in fun and natural ways. Research shows that many students experience “summer learning loss,” especially in subjects like math and reading, when they go months without practicing academic skills. Some studies suggest children can lose as much as a month of progress over summer break. Here are 10 simple and exciting summer activities that encourage learning while making lasting memories:1
- Listen to Live Music (live concert, community music event, dancing and singing, etc.)
- Enjoy Gardening Together (gardening teaches patience, responsibility and science)
- Create a Cozy Reading Nook (reading is very effective at keeping learning skills sharp)
- Play “Sink or Float” (put various objects in water to see if they sink or float)
- Birdwatch at a Park or Zoo (birdwatching teaches patience and observation skills)
- Create Your Own Scavenger Hunt (scavenger hunts build teamwork and problem solving)
- Discover a New Podcast Together (listening encourages critical thinking and learning)
- Cook a Recipe (cooking allows kids to be creative, learn precision and follow instructions)
- Encourage Journaling (journaling helps kids formulate thoughts on paper and express ideas)
- Visit a Museum, Zoo or Historical Site (adventures spark curiosity and encourages learning)
Summer activities don’t have to be limited to a one-time experience. Many of these activities can be enjoyed throughout the year. Measuring plant growth or growing vegetation can be a way to engage children for months and allow them to see the fruits of their labor. If children enjoy reading, they can be occupied for hours on end in many different settings. Birdwatching may turn into a destination vacation if a child takes a strong interest. Cooking could be a hobby children enjoy daily and might even become a career goal. Learning about history, culture, art and science are all terrific ways to allow children to learn in a fun setting while also teaching them important aspects about our world.1
Small moments make a big difference. Research shows regular learning activities during summer can help children feel more confident and prepared when school starts again. This summer, choose one new learning activity each week for your family to try together. You do not need expensive supplies or strict schedules… just curiosity, creativity and time together. Start small, stay consistent and make learning part of the fun. Your child’s brain will thank you when the new school year begins.1 If you are interested in becoming an Advocate for the Innocent member and gaining access to our Resource Center ($10/month or $99/annually), visit https://advocatefortheinnocent.org/memberships/.
