Celebrating Safer Internet Day 2025

Celebrating Safer Internet Day

Safer Internet Day (SID) is back! Originally launched as an EU initiative, SID has grown into a global movement, celebrated in over 180 countries and territories, and aims to enhance digital literacy, online safety, and responsible internet use. SID unites people worldwide in making the internet a safer and more inclusive space for everyone, especially children and young people. This year’s theme is “Together for a Better Internet” and it’s a call to action for governments, schools, organizations, and individuals to collaborate and tackle the online issues that affect our digital lives.1

In addition to schools, students, and parents, global brands are also playing their part. Tech giants like Facebook, Google, and Twitter are all on board to help promote a safer digital space. The need for such awareness has never been more urgent. Every day, thousands of new websites and platforms are created, each contributing to the ever-evolving digital landscape. With this constant influx of new content and technologies, it’s crucial to stay informed about the risks and opportunities the internet presents. SID serves as a reminder that internet safety should be a priority for adults and children alike.1

Every family’s relationship with technology is unique. The National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) provides resources that may help parents choose the right experience for their family and build healthy digital habits. Whether you’re looking to help your child safely explore the online world or want to guide them to high-quality content, you can tailor products and apps to empower your children to watch, listen, play, learn, create, and communicate online safely. PTA resources include:1

  • Be Internet Awesome is a program from Google, designed to teach kids the fundamentals of digital citizenship and safety so they can explore the online world with confidence
  • Screen Smart provides hands-on education for parents and caregivers on how to use supervision features across Meta’s platforms and to facilitate open dialogue around the top questions parents have about screen time and devices
  • The Smart Talk is a free tool that helps caregivers and kids (ages five to 17) have positive, proactive technology conversations and set healthy digital limits together
  • Ready, Tech, Go! is a collaboration between PTA and AT&T that helps families, parents and caregivers navigate online challenges through meaningful peer-to-peer discussions about screen readiness and ways to promote healthy and responsible device use for all members of the family

As we celebrate Safer Internet Day 2025, let’s reflect on the progress made and the work still to be done. Whether through online education, open discussions, or simply staying aware of the risks, every action counts. Together, we can create an internet that is safer, more inclusive, and better for all. Join the movement and play your part in shaping a safer digital future!
