Every year, millions of people across the United States come together to celebrate National Volunteer Week, a time dedicated to recognizing the power of service and the individuals who make a difference in their communities. In 2026, National Volunteer Week takes place from April 19–25, continuing a tradition that has inspired action since 1974. But this week is more than just a celebration, it’s a call to action.1
National Volunteer Week exists to shine a light on the individuals who give their time, skills and compassion to others. But its deeper purpose is to remind us that anyone can be a force for change. Volunteers strengthen local communities, support nonprofits and essential services, bridge gaps where resources fall short, and build connections in an increasingly disconnected world. Even small acts (delivering meals, mentoring youth, cleaning up neighborhoods, etc.) create ripple effects that extend far beyond a single moment.1
One of the biggest changes in recent years is how people volunteer. While traditional, long-term commitments still matter, many people are embracing more flexible options: short-term or “episodic” volunteering, virtual opportunities and informal, neighbor-to-neighbor support. This shift makes volunteering more accessible than ever. You don’t need a packed schedule or specialized skills, just a willingness to help.1
National Volunteer Week isn’t just about recognizing those who already serve, it’s about inspiring new people to get involved. Whether you’re a student, a professional, or retired, there’s a place for you: volunteer at a local food bank or shelter, offer your skills (writing, tutoring, tech support), help a neighbor with errands or childcare, and join a community clean-up or event. Even a few hours can make a meaningful difference. Here’s how you can get involved to support Advocate for the Innocent:1
