April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month

National Child Abuse Prevention Month (NCAPM) is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of keeping children safe and supporting families, and has been in observance since 1983. Individuals, organizations, and communities across the United States engage in various activities to spread awareness and celebrate healthy childhoods. From planting pinwheels to tying ribbons, hosting trainings, organizing fundraisers and supporting local child advocacy programs, the campaign brings communities together in a shared effort to prevent child abuse and neglect.1

One of the simplest and most visible ways to participate in NCAPM is by taking part in Wear Blue Day on April 4, 2025. On this day, people across the country are encouraged to wear blue as a symbol of solidarity with child abuse prevention efforts. This simple act raises awareness and also shows that you are committed to protecting children. One of the most recognized symbols of NCAPM is the pinwheel as these colorful, spinning toys represent the carefree and joyful childhood that every child deserves. Many communities’ plant or display pinwheels in prominent public spaces. This symbolic gesture encourages people to take notice and think about the importance of creating safe and loving homes for children.1

The statistics surrounding child abuse in the United States are alarming, underscoring the urgent need for continued efforts in prevention, awareness and intervention:2

  • 558,899 children were victims of abuse and neglect in the U.S. in 2022
  • U.S. child welfare authorities investigate the safety of more than 7.5 million children annually, with about 3 million children receiving an investigation or alternative response
  • In 2022, an estimated 1,990 children died from abuse and neglect in the United States
  • Neglect is the most common form of abuse, affecting 74% of victims, followed by physical abuse (17%), sexual abuse (11%) and sex trafficking (0.2%)
  • Nearly 50% of all U.S. children experience at least one type of childhood trauma
  • 434,000 perpetrators were reported to have abused or neglected a child in 2022

While NCAPM primarily targets adults and the role they play in safeguarding children, there are also opportunities for kids to get involved in the cause (create pinwheels, wear blue on 4/5, write letters of support, engage in conversations).1 We must do everything we can to ensure that every child is safe, loved, and protected. Together, we can help end child abuse and create a future where every child can grow up in a nurturing and secure environment. Let’s work together to protect the future of our children.
