April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

Every April, Child Abuse Prevention Month shines a national spotlight on something we all have a role in shaping: a world where every child grows up safe, supported and loved. It’s not just about raising awareness, it’s about strengthening families, investing in communities and building systems that make prevention possible long before a crisis occurs. At the heart of this movement is a simple but powerful idea: when families have access to the right resources, relationships, and support… children thrive.1

Families today are navigating rising costs, increased stress and widening gaps in support. These challenges can place enormous pressure on caregivers, making it harder to maintain stability. Prevention begins when we support families with compassion, practical support and meaningful connections. When communities invest in prevention, each layer of support creates a stronger foundation for children. From access to affordable housing and quality health care to parent education and economic stability, every investment helps families stay steady through life’s twists and turns.1

The pinwheel, the national symbol for child abuse prevention, represents the joyful, healthy childhood every child deserves. With families at the center, each turn of the pinwheel reflects the systems, programs, policies, and everyday acts of care that help families thrive. Understanding the scope and impact of prevention helps us advocate for meaningful change. Research shows that when families receive the support they need:1

  • 48% fewer infants are born at low birth weight as a result of early home visiting programs
  • Paid family leave reduces reports of infant child abuse and neglect by 14%
  • Home visiting support reduces homelessness risk by 27% for families with young children

Child abuse prevention isn’t the responsibility of a single system or profession. It takes all of us working together to create environments where families feel supported rather than isolated. Small actions matter. Checking in on a neighbor, supporting family-friendly workplace policies, advocating for community resources, or volunteering your time can all make a difference. This month communities across the country will come together to advocate for child abuse prevention. This is an opportunity to turn awareness into action. Here’s how you can get involved:1

  • Donate to organizations that support children and families in your community
  • Advocate for policies like paid family leave, affordable childcare and housing stability
  • Educate yourself and others about the importance of prevention
  • Participate in local events or pinwheel displays to show your support

The vision is clear: a world where every child grows up in a safe, stable and nurturing environment. When we invest in families before challenges become crises, we unlock endless possibilities.
